How to keep your home clean during renovations
Even a simple renovation job like painting can leave a huge mess if you don’t take the right precautions. Renovations are a necessary evil if you want to maintain or boost your property’s value for a quick sale. Although you might need to do some more cleaning after the building team is gone, these tips will help you maintain your home’s cleanliness, even during a major remodelling project.
Clear the Area
Move as much as you can away from the work area. Even if it’s a small project, renovation can get surprisingly dirty in ways that you won’t be able to foresee. Remove light fixtures, pictures, and other wall decorations, as well as light pieces of furniture and accessories to protect them from getting dusty and covered with splashes of paint or other building materials. It’s also considerably easier to work in an empty room.
Protect the Furnishings
Large pieces like wardrobes, beds & mattresses, shelving units and even some decorations often stay in the picture during the home improvement. People usually cover them with plastic and forget about them until the renovation is over, however, this is not always enough to catch all the dust from construction and keep it away from the furniture. You should wrap the furnishings in old sheets and then lay the plastic covers. Thickly woven cotton and linen are the best for trapping even fine dust that usually finds its way in despite the plastic. Make sure to remove the textile covers very gently when it’s time for the after builders cleaning. If you unwrap and lift them carefully all the dust and dirt will remain on the fabric.
Limit the Dirt with Dirt Trace
If the renovation project takes place in an inner area of the house, away from an entrance, it will be challenging to keep the floors of your home clean. A great solution is to cover the path leading to the work area with carpet scraps, planks, or thick plastic. This way, you or your builders will limit the mud, debris, and spills on the path. Once the construction work is finished for the day, you can pick up the pieces, shake or vacuum them thoroughly and put them away or back down if continuing the works.
Create a Daily Cleaning Routine During the Renovation
The best thing you can do to minimise the mess left after builders is to tailor a daily cleaning routine for your needs. You need to discuss in advance who is cleaning what during the renovation with the contractors. Usually, they must take care of the daily clean-ups and disposal of debris in the renovated area, however, it’s still a good idea to complete some of the chores yourself. You may need to vacuum and dust the other areas of the house as it tends to spread into many other rooms.
Hire Professionals After Builders Finish Their Job
Calling professional cleaners is arguably the best thing you can do after a major renovation. It’s also the easiest way to enjoy the results of the makeover without hassle and exhausting efforts afterwards. Even when you follow the first four rules of maintaining your home mess-free during a renovation, with big remodelling projects there are often; stains, splashes, and debris left. There are specialised services designed to wipe off any traces that there was a renovation at your home. If you must deal with a lot of dirt, they are a fast and cost-efficient way to do so.
