How to properly treat grease stains

Grease stains are the worst; they can ruin carpets, upholstery, car seats, clothes, and everything in between! What’s more, because they tend to seep in and stick, they welcome a lot of harmful bacteria into your home. It’s even worse if you are in a rental property; you don’t want to end up losing your security deposit over a few spills. We all know grease, fresh or dried, can be tricky to deal with. Here’s a fool-proof guide on how to treat grease stains the right way.

Preparation is key

Before we get to the cleaning part, let’s quickly list the things you’ll need.

  • Hoover.

  • Kitchen roll.

  • Dish soap.

  • Baking soda/talcum powder.

  • Clean cloth for rinsing and more for drying after.

  • Soft scrubbing brush.

  • Ammonia solution, diluted.

Let’s Clean Dried Grease Stains the Right Way

Let’s start with dried grease stains, as they can often go unnoticed, especially if you have kids; you never know where they have managed to get their grubby hands. Although it can be tough, worry not, here is the solution to cleaning carpets, upholstery, and other fabrics:

  1. Get your kitchen roll and hot, soapy water.

  2. Dampen the stain and then lift as much of it as you can with dry kitchen roll.

  3. Now it’s time to apply your baking soda. Sprinkle a decent amount over the stain and leave it for an hour or so before vacuuming up the residue.

  4. Now get some hot, soapy water and blot away with a clean towel, then leave to dry.

  5. There should now only be light traces of the stain left. Go ahead and get your ammonia solution ready; we recommend 1 tsp of household ammonia and ¼ cup of warm water.

  6. Get a cloth and start blotting gently. If the fabric isn’t water-resistant, be careful not to soak the area.

  7. Now start working the area with a scrubbing brush, applying small amounts of pressure. Be careful not to damage the furniture!

  8. Get a bowl of clean water and a new, clean cloth to rinse the area properly. Then get a dry towel to absorb up as much of the excess moisture as possible.

Clean Fresh Grease Stains the Right Way

For new, fresh grease stains, grab some kitchen roll and start soaking up as much of the grease as possible, but don’t rub whatever you do! Leave a paper towel on the area for at least 20 minutes.
Sprinkle your baking soda/talcum powder liberally over the stain and vacuum up your dry component.
If you still have traces of the stain, time to get out the washing up liquid. Squirt a tiny amount onto the spillage and use a damp cloth to blot it.
Now rinse out the fabric and blot it dry using kitchen roll.
